Top Ten Favourite Book Cats

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “top ten animals from books.” Although I do love dogs, I am very much a cat person, so here are 10 of my favourite bookish cats.

Boots and Pavo from The Night Circus
I adored everything about Poppet and Widget training these tiny kittens to perform in the Cirque des Rêves.

Smudge from Get a Life, Chloe Brown
Smudge is not only the catalyst for Red and Chloe to finally start becoming friends, but he’s also an absolute angel: scared of everything, and in need of love and cuddles.

The Cat from Coraline
This nameless cat is Coraline’s sidekick as she navigates the “Other World.” I loved how, despite his snark, the cat ended up being a good friend to Coraline and helped her stand up to the Other Mother.

The Cheshire Cat from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Probably the most iconic literary cat of all time. I love him so much that I bought a Cheshire Cat puzzle to keep me entertained at the start of quarantine, and I’m very tempted to frame it.

Faithful from The Song of the Lioness series
This purple-eyed magical cat can also talk to humans – when he decides to, of course – and his journey with Alanna is so filled with so many entertaining scenes.

Mogget from Sabriel
Sure, he’s a literal demon, but the magical collar he wears makes him look like a cat, so I’m counting it. He’s grumpy, deadly, and prone to napping – much like an actual, non-magical cat.

Kirjava from The Amber Spyglass
Kirjava is Will’s daemon, a large cat with the most lustrous fur who I cannot wait to see in the next season of the BBC adaptation.

Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia
A lion is just a big cat, so he 100% counts! I admittedly didn’t have strong feelings about him when I read the books as a kid, but the movie adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe changed that completely.

Church from The Shadowhunter Chronicles
He’s grouchy and overly dramatic, so you can’t help but adore him.

Taggle from Plain Kate
One of the brightest spots of this book, Taggle is a talking cat who is entertaining, brave, and a truly good friend.
