I stumbled across this 30 day book challenge by The Chronicles of Radiya and decided to give it a try. Hopefully it will lead to 30 consecutive days of blogging that liven up the blog a bit and give us a chance to get to know each other a little better.
Day 9: A Book You Thought You Wouldn’t Like But Ended Up Loving
I love fantasy novels and had heard excellent reviews of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but I was afraid that it would turn out to be too much like my experience with Lord of the Rings: I spent weeks wading through endless pages of description just to finish the books, which have been gathering dust on my bookshelf ever since.
The majority of my friends love the HBO adaptation of these novels, so I was very tempted to just watch the show. Of course, the bookish part of me argued that I can’t possibly watch the show without reading the books first, so I found myself on the couch holding this ~800 page work and wondering what on earth I had gotten myself into. I quickly found myself engaged in the plot, but it wasn’t until one of my favourite characters was killed off that I realized how invested in this series I had become – and just how much I was enjoying it. I read all five books in under two months, flew through all three seasons of the show… and now I’m stuck with the incredibly long wait for The Winds of Winter. Hurry up and write, Martin – I need to know what happens next!
