New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2021

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2021.” I read a good mix of books from authors I already loved, continued reading quite a few series, and picked up books from debut authors in 2021. I didn’t read a lot of new-to-me authors that weren’t debuts, however, here are some of the ones that I read last year:

Emily Henry
Beach Read and People We Meet on Vacation were two of my favourite reads of 2021 and, in my opinion, completely deserve all of the hype that caused me to pick them up. For some reason, I was under the impression that Beach Read was a true debut, but it turns out that Emily Henry has also written YA novels, and I’ve heard that A Million Junes is heartbreakingly beautiful.

Alice Oseman
I read Heartstopper volumes 1-3 after hearing rave reviews and seeing that the Netflix adaptation would be here this spring. Solitaire has been on my TBR for ages, but I didn’t realize until Googling “what order to read Heartstopper books” that they were by the same author. My 2022 goals are now to read all of her backlist!

Rachel Lynn Solomon
I picked up The Ex Talk on a whim because I thought the cover was cute, and ended up enjoying it. I now have a hold on Weather Girl that is currently in transit, and I just finished reading We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This. And then I will start tackling some of the older titles like Today Tonight Tomorrow!

Julia Quinn
I had heard of Julia Quinn before, but it wasn’t until 2021 that I finally decided to start reading the Bridgerton series. I finished the first 3 books last year, and have a bunch more to go!

Sophie Gonzalez
I vaguely recall seeing the green cover of Only Mostly Devastated on bookshelves, but Perfect on Paper was my first real introduction to Sophie Gonzalez’s books — and it was such a fun read.

Amanda Foody
Do I own the first two Ace of Shades books? Yes. Have I opened them yet? No. They have been sitting on my bookshelves for years. After reading All of Us Villains, though, I will be prioritizing Ace of Shades in my TBR!

Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Despite not being a horror reader, I did read Mexican Gothic in 2021. I’ve heard that Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s works span a number of genres, so I’m excited to read the less unsettling ones!

Malinda Lo
Ash has been on my to-read list for at least a decade, but I still haven’t read it despite loving the premise of a sapphic Cinderella retelling. Instead, Last Night at the Telegraph Club has the honour of being my first read by Malinda Lo.

Donna Tartt
I had heard of both The Secret History and The Goldfinch, but didn’t read the former until last fall, after seeing it in every Dark Academia BookTok video.

Rebecca Serle
In Five Years was a book that I saw all over bookstagram, and while it was a heavier read than I expected, I did enjoy it. I had not heard of the author before, but I did recognize the cover of one of her older novels, Famous in Love, when I saw it on Goodreads.

What new-to-you authors did you discover in 2021?
