Top Ten Favourite Books of 2020

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “top ten favourite books of 2020.” I had a really good reading year and enjoyed almost all of the books that I picked up, so narrowing it down to only 10 was tricky! My full list of 2020 reads can be found here, but these are the 10 (excluding rereads) that I loved the most.

The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang
After finishing The Dragon Republic, I was left with the biggest book hangover. It’s my favourite so far in the series, insofar as a book that is dark, unrelenting, and causes emotional pain can be enjoyable.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
This was easily my most anticipated 2020 release, and it more than lived up to my expectations. It was different than what I had imagined it would be, but still incredibly beautiful and I cannot wait to read it again.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
This was beautiful, heavy, haunting, and cathartic. I kept thinking about it for weeks after I finished reading and have already recommended it to so many friends. My review can be found here.

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
This was an uncomfortable but important read. Dark, haunting, and beautifully written — it stayed with me for quite a while.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
It was really surreal to read this in the midst of Toronto’s lockdown. Despite the subject matter, it was surprisingly hopeful, and I can’t wait to see the TV adaptation.

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord
This was one of my first reads of 2020 and it set the bar high for the rest of the year. It combined everything I love: banter-filled enemies-to-lovers romance, social media, and lots of baking.

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle
I love a good enemies-to-lovers story, and this took it one step further by making it a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers story filled with pranks, sabotage, and snark. I absolutely loved it.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
Charming, banter-filled, and inclusive; this lived up to all of the hype and solidified Talia Hibbert as an auto-buy author for me.

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles
I love a dark circus story. This combined Phantom of the Opera and Moulin Rouge in such a fresh way, and every single reference to the plays made me so, so happy.

Fable by Adrienne Young
This dark fantasy about the wicked sea hooked me from the first page, and the ending made me wish I had a copy of the sequel!

What was your favourite book of 2020? Have you read any of the ones on my list?
