When in France, Visit Used Book Cafés

Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting France for the second time this year. While I spent most of my time in Dijon for work, I had a couple of days off to explore Paris – and, of course, I had to do a bit of bookish sightseeing while I was there.

One of the highlights of my trip involved visiting Merci, a ridiculously aesthetic set of boutique shops that seemed to have everything, including a used book café. I’ve never felt more at home as when I’m surrounded by books and this was no exception: I somehow spent an hour and a half in just the café, sipping iced tea and leafing through well-loved paperbacks.

It’s not a proper trip to Paris without a visit to Shakespeare and Company. I splurged on a gorgeous copy of His Dark Materials and, after a few weeks of having it on display, I’ve finally gotten over my fear of ruining the book enough to give it a read.

Do you make a point of visiting bookstores or book cafés when you travel? What are some of your favourites? Let me know in the comments below.
