Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.
This week’s topic is “top ten things we like/dislike on our book covers.”
Things I like: typography and fun fonts, minimalism, illustrations instead of stock photos, when an author’s book covers match (even if they’re stand alones/not part of the same series), when the cover ties in well with the book or depicts a pivotal scene, when the title is the main focus, silhouettes, bright colours
Some of my favourite covers that follow those trends:
[[BONUS]] Things I dislike: stock photos (especially when they’re repeated), whitewashing, when the character on the cover doesn’t match the MC’s description, girls in dresses, movie tie in editions, couples, partial faces
Exceptions to those rules*:
*because they follow the trends that I absolutely love in a cover, cancelling out the not-so-good ones.
What are some of your favourite / least favourite cover trends? Leave me a list or a link to your Top Ten Tuesday post in the comments below.
That V.E. Schwab book cover is absolutely awesome! I love it! Great list this week! 🙂
It’s definitely one of my favourites!
I’m falling more and more in love with lovely fonts. I especially like the one on Love Letters to the Dead. Shiver was one of the covers I picked, too! I love the forest bordering.
The font is so simple but pretty. I’d love to download a copy of it, since I feel like it could be used for almost anything! Me too – and the blue and silver tones on Shiver’s cover are absolutely perfect.
The museum of Intangible things is such a summery cover, I like it. A darker shade of magic is so unique and weird, I love it 🙂

Yes! The summery feel makes it look like the perfect beach read! A Darker Shade of Magic might just be my new favourite cover, since it’s so simple but so unique. 🙂
