Top Ten Books On My To-Read List

My to-read list on Goodreads currently consists of 277 titles. From that alone I’m sure you can guess that there are a lot of books that I would like to read this summer, but I’ll do my best to narrow it down to ten that I’m really looking forward to reading.

This has been on my to-read list for ages and I’ve heard nothing but good thing about it. I keep telling myself that I can’t watch the movie until I’ve finally read the book, so hopefully that will be sufficient enough motivation to finally get me to start reading it.

I’ve heard this described as a cross between Harry Potter and Narnia but for an adult audience, so it’s definitely a book that I’d love to read soon.

ImageAnd The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
I loved The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, so I can’t wait to read Hosseini’s newest novel – with a box of tissues easily on hand.

ImageThe Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
This is probably my most anticipated read of the summer. Given how wonderful Neil Gaiman’s writing is, I’m sure that this will exceed my already high expectations.

ImageDark Triumph by Robin LaFevers
Grave Mercy is one of my favourite recent reads. Assassin nuns in 16th century France made for a really intriguing premise, so I’m excited to see what this sequel will bring.

ImageShadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
I have heard so many great things about this book. In my high school history class, we got to learn a lot about Russian history – which I strongly considered majoring in at one point – so the fact that this combines many elements of Russian culture and folklore make it a must read for me.

I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the cover art is adorable. A lot of authors that I like have given this positive reviews (John Green, Gayle Forman, Stephanie Perkins) so I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy it.

I tend to be a bit wary about YA books involving angels, since I’ve been fairly disappointed overall by the ones that I’ve read. This has so many glowing reviews on Goodreads and has been recommended to me countless times this summer, so I figure I should give it a try.

When this was recommended to me, it was described as similar to The Book Thief, which is one of my favourite books and the main reason I decided to add it to my to-read list.

ImageThe Moon and More by Sarah Dessen
Sarah Dessen novels are my guilty pleasure. While I complain over and over about how often unnecessary love triangles overshadow the plot in many YA sci-fi/fantasy novels, I love to read contemporary YA books because the romance is (more often than not) adorable. I’m very excited to read The Moon and More, since it seems like a cute, fun summer read.

  • I know what you mean about Angelfall. I’m wary about super hyped up books too, but seriously, don’t miss out on this one! I didn’t expect much, but I was blown away. Best. Book. EVER! 🙂

  • The Shadow of the Wind is one of my all-time favorites and I need to reread it one of these days. I just recently listened to The Magicians. It was not what I had expected at all. More Narnia than HP and very adult. I am still processing…but I will probably read the next one eventually. I am planning on reading Grave Mercy this summer! I am so excited to finally read it. Have a great summer!

  • You have some great books picked out for this summer! I can’t wait for Ocean at the End of the Lane either. Eleanor & Park and Angelfall are both amazing. And I just recently read Shadow and Bone and LOVED it. I know nothing about Russian culture, but I thought Bardugo’s world was really beautifully realized. I hope you enjoy it!

    My Top Ten

  • You and I have a lot of to-read books in common: The Magicians, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Shadow and Bone, Eleanor & Park, Angelfall, The Shadow of the Wind, and The Moon and More. Soooo pretty much all of them. Great list!
