Top Ten Most Recent Additions To My Bookshelf

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “top ten most recent additions to my bookshelf.” I don’t have bookshelves in my current apartment, and instead have book piles on both my nightstand, dresser, and desk…. so, for the purposes of today’s post, those are now my “bookshelves.”

The Books

The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz
This book was handed out at my former company’s Christmas party as suggested reading during the New Year – the company had grown from a startup to a scale-up, which comes with a lot of changes (both internal and product-focused). I haven’t read it yet, but plan to soon!

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus remains one of my all-time favourite books, so I broke by book buying ban to pre-order The Starless Sea. I managed to finish reading it before the book tour’s Toronto stop, and left that evening with a freshly signed copy!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
This one had already been on my nightstand for years, but I got it signed in November(!!) and feel like that makes it count as a “new” book.

The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter
Dr. Jen Gunter is one of my favourite Twitter follows so, naturally, when I saw she was coming to the Toronto Reference Library as part of her book tour, I had to go. I got a copy of the book with my ticket, but have only skimmed through it so far.

Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez
As a feminist that loves data, this was one of my most anticipated 2019 releases. I’m about halfway through it, since I want to take the time to actually digest the findings.

The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway, but have yet to start it. I haven’t read a Cassandra Clare book in ages so it should be an interesting experience!

Shelf Accessories

I’ve been on a self-imposed book buying ban for years as part of my attempt to adjust to bigger city budgeting, but I have been gifted several adorable bookshelf companions.

Plush Kylo Ren & BB8
I love Star Wars and have a weakness for both the villains and the droids. Tiny Kylo used to sit with my Cookie Monster plush on my headboard, but he fell over in the middle of the night and talked (when you press on his stomach, he quotes some lines from the movies)… so he now sits on top of my Darker Shade of Magic box set.

Himalayan Salt Lamp
When I first started dating my partner at the beginning of 2019, I teased him about his salt lamp, since it seemed very Goop-adjacent. For our 6 month anniversary, he bought me my own salt lamp… and while it hasn’t provided any healing energy, it does look really nice amongst my books.

Bulbasaur Succulent Planter
This is the first real plant I’ve owned in years, and I love it so much. Will I manage to keep it alive for all of 2020? Here’s hoping.

What were your most recent shelf additions?
