Top Ten Books to Pull Me Out of a Reading Slump

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “top ten books to pull me out of a reading slump.” As a mood reader, I find that I get into reading slumps fairly often and that re-reading old favourites can be the best way to pull me out of it. Here are some of those books:

The Magical Escapes

Sometimes gorgeous imagery and a truly magical setting are all you need to get out of a slump.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus is one of the most beautifully vivid books I’ve ever read – even with the 28204 re-reads that I’ve done – so I definitely recommend giving it a read, even if you’re not on a slump.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

If you’re looking for some everyday magic/magical realism, this series is a wonderful choice. It’s so easy to fall in love with both Blue and her boys, the subtle magic, and Maggie’s gorgeous writing.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

If you need to fall in love with the written word again, Laini Taylor is an excellent choice: her prose is incredibly lush and beautiful, painting the most vivid imagery. I wish my words could be half as lovely.

The Cute Romances

Sometimes the magic of love is all you need.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

If you’re looking for a sweet, fun read, Anna and the French Kiss has it all: a cute romance, a Parisian setting, and a swoony boy.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is ridiculously sweet and is best paired with a giant plate of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies (the ultimate comfort food). And once you’ve finished the3book, you can26o watch the newly-released Netflix adaptation of the same name which quickly cemented its place on my “all-time favourite romcoms” list.

The Childhood Favourites

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling

This is one of my favourite comfort reads: I have so many positive memories associated with the series and it holds a truly special place in my heart. It can be dangerous to read on a reading slump, though, as you’ll want to finish the entire series before starting something new (but, hey, at least it’s gotten you to read!).

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

The dark humour in A Series of Unfortunate Events is often enough to make me feel better about any situation that I find myself in so it stands to reason that it would also be a great way to pull yourself out of a reading slump.

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch

The Paper Bag Princess is not just a cute read; it’s also an inspiring one. I re-read this whenever I’m going through periods of self-doubt or have had yet another boy break my heart – it’s always nice to be reminded that a) you are enough and b) you can do your own rescuing.

“Short & Sweet” Reads

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo

This collection of dark fairy tales is incredibly enthralling. Given that it’s an anthology, completing this book counts as reading six stories, all of which are under 50 pages long – the perfect way to increase your confidence when you’re in a slump.

everyone’s a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jomny sun

This book is heartwarming, sweet, wholesome, and incredibly deep. It’s a great examination of love and humanity and belonging, coupled with cute illustrations that just beg to be coloured.
