I stumbled across this 30 day book challenge by The Chronicles of Radiya and decided to give it a try. Hopefully it will lead to 30 consecutive days of blogging that liven up the blog a bit and give us a chance to get to know each other a little better.
Day 8: Most Overrated Book
One of my friends from high school lent me a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey, claiming that it was one of the best books they’ve ever read. I was curious to see if it’d live up to all of the hype, so I decided to give it a try. Poor decision. I struggled to get through even the first few chapters, and somehow made it through the first 100 pages before finally allowing myself to quit and mark it as “dnf.”
I honestly don’t understand how this book managed to sell so many copies when it’s poorly written, has inconsistent characterization (though, really, the characters were nothing special to begin with), and has no depth whatsoever. And don’t even get me started on Christian Grey. Abuse, manipulation and stalking aren’t sexy or flattering; they’re creepy and should be seen as warning signs.
I feel the need to say that I have nothing against people who read/write erotica. It’s not my cup of tea, but I respect the fact that everyone has different preferences. From my (albeit limited) understanding though, this book isn’t an accurate portrayal of consensual BDSM relationships; it just romanticizes abusive relationships, and that shouldn’t be condoned.

Thanks for confirming my assumptions about this series and why I refuse to give in and give them a try. People always ask me if I have read these books and I just can’t bring myself to do it.
No problem – in my opinion, they’re definitely not worth reading. I’m unable to say no to books that people lend me though, so I felt like I had to at least give them a try.
